A little lesson in baby skin care products for new parents...

When we first adopted Hudson I, of course, was new to the differences in his skin care vs. what I had known. I searched the Internet looking for information to help this new mama out. I've talked with numerous other adoptive parents. I joined a yahoo group for adoptive parents of AA or bi-racial children. For those of you that will be adopting soon or recently have adopted, I wanted to share with you what I have found to be the best products for Hudson's skin and hair. I've tried gobs of products and these are the ones that far outweigh them all.

We love Burt's Bees. It is gentle on his skin. He doesn't break out from it. We use the milk bath, the baby wash, the buttermilk lotion, and talc free powder, the apricot baby oil, and the diaper ointment. All of these smell divine! The baby oil is all natural and mineral oil free. I use it in his hair too. For those of you new to adopting a AA or bi-racial baby, you will find their skin to need much more hydration that you would imagine. Another superb product is Bath and Body Works Lay it On Thick shea butter lotion. This also smells delicious and people always comment on how yummy Hudson smells when I rub this on him.

I did google searches to find Burt's Bees products on clearance. I found them significantly reduced at Vitacost (I think...I can't remember which website I found them on). I've also found some Burt's Bees natural mosquito repellent that I plan on trying on him later this summer...oh, and some Avacado Butter Pre-Shampoo treatment. It can be used as a styling agent and it works well in his hair for that as well. It hydrates nicely and smells good. Both of these were clearanced out so I thought I'd try them. Anyway...I just wanted you to know that you can find them at reduced prices. Target also carries them if you need them right away.

I've tried Coconut Oil...it is nice, but the smell was just a little weird on him. I now use it for baking. :) I used Eucerin cream, but it was pretty hard to spread on him. He would wiggle around and it would get everywhere. :) Ok...I'll stop there, but just know that I've tried a lot! We don't do as many baths, because his skin just can not handle it. We do sponge baths, but keep the actual baths to weekly. We just make sure to keep him lotioned-up.

He is 5 1/2 months now and his hair is really beginning to change. His soft baby hair is growing into kinky curls. It is more coarse and dry. I love it!

I hope this helps some of you out. I know I was so confused about what I should and shouldn't use on him. If there are products that you have found to be great, please leave them in the comments...I'd love to know what other products are great. If you have any questions, please post them.

Great post! I triple the Burt's Bees vote even for my not so "bi-racial" little darling!

I had a birth mom recently sit with her child's adoptive mom and give her skin and hair tips for the baby. I think that is so awesome!

Thanks for the discount site. I'm getting low!

Thanks for the great tips, I've been looking all over for information! I'm new to this too, so if anyone out there has tips I could use them! Do you use baby wash for their hair as well until they are older and their hair starts to get more course?

shonna--yes, I used the baby wash all over on him from birth. burt's bees also has a shampoo bar and i used that as well. they work pretty much the same. i started with a little sample pack of products to try all of their products.

i also rub the lotion/oil right into the hair...i started that right from the beginning.

let me know if you have any other questions.

Hey there
Do you bathe him everyday? And do you wash his hair everyday? Just wondering if it makes his skin dry?

Carol's Daughter has some wonderful hair care products and a new Body Jelly that works well.
What works for one of my kids doesn't work for another so we hit and miss on ashey days!
thanks for these tips
ange

M-Mom--No, I do not bathe him everyday. His skin could not handle that. I bathe him weekly. I can wipe him clean with a washclothe, but not in the tub. I have even just washed his hair while he layed on a towel. I usually only wash it when he is in the tub. I would not recommend daily bathing.

Ange--I've looked long and hard at the Carol's Daughter products. I've heard wonderful things about them...but didn't know what to start with. Thanks for the suggestion. Hey if Will Smith endorses it then I am all about thinking it's fab!

Laura...I'm sure this is a whole new world, but look at all that you are learning (and passing on to others!). :-) We had quite the time with "skin care" products for our girls, only because they had such awful eczema. We used Eucerin QUITE a bit...we also tried oatmeal baths (don't know if that would helpful for Hudson at all). One fairly inexpensive product we really liked (and, again, I have no idea if this would be helpful for H) was Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula For Dry, Itchy Skin Soothing Oil (I believe it's actually marketed to pregnant mommies with itchy bellies!)- you can see all of the Palmer's products at etbrowne.com!

We've used Burt's Bees for years now. My children are pale, but they do have sensitive skin.

I'm a little bummed out that Burt's Bees is being bought out by Clorox.

Another brand we like is Weleda. Their Calendula diaper cream is much more moisturizing than BB's is. I love the BB diaper ointment, but sometimes it would make their little bums too dry. Weleda would always fix that.

Thanks for all the tips and sharing your story! I've been a lurker for quite some time. You've been very inspiring!

Thank you so much for this. I like haering what others have used and like.
Our daughter is AA/hispanic so I'm not sure how she will be as she gets bigger. I've watched Hudson change so much I wonder if she will change more as well.

Thanks for stopping by! My Sara speaks highly of you and always with love.
My niece uses the Burt's Bees on her caucasian baby and says it is fabulous for rashes and blotches--wouldn't be without it.
Hope you come by again....
