CrAzY Day

Here's the report you've been waiting for...Daizey is only going UP on the charts, she continues to gain weight. Diezel dropped a bit, but not enough to be readmitted. Today was a rough day with Daizey not eating. She drank the pediasure, but refused anything else we offered. Diezel ate much better today. Please pray for their poops to STOP. They just keep having loose stools. It is so hard to know what to do and how to help them stop. It is good for them to drink the pediasure, but is that perpetuating the diarrhea...don't know! Steffany is constantly changing a diaper.

So here's a great story for today. Gadesa needed to go to a lab for a blood draw today. After the doctor's appt. we took off to find the lab. We passed a Starbucks and ran in to get them something. The entire staff surrounded Steff who was holding Daizey to see her. The guy taking our order started said, "Oh, I am all tingly inside" and started crying. He was so touched by their story. They gave her the entire order for $4...3 drinks, bread, and scone. They said Starbucks is all about giving back! ;) Here is the part that tops the entire day-- Steff was sent home with a "stool kit" with instructions to collect these four viles with stool. I was waiting in the car with Diezel while Steff took Daizey in with Gadesa for the blood draw. Half way into our waiting he woke up. I knew I had to offer him something to eat. I had some of the scone with me, so he started eating that...and loved it! All of a sudden I smelled an oh so familiar smell. I knew that they wanted the stool sample as soon as possible, and by the time we got home it would take forever to get back out with the sample to get it to the doctors office. As Steff was coming into the parking lot, I told her what the situation was. I offerred my suggestion..."do you want to do it here?" We both agreed that it was pretty much the only option at this point. Steff set up here "station" on the front seat. I held Daizey out in the parking lot trying not to gag while Steff was looking. Steff went at it toping the list of "bet you've never done this" experiences. A little while into it one of the nurses from the lab came out because she wanted to meet the twins. She saw what was happening and offered to bring some gloves and Clorox wipes out. I made as many dumb jokes as I could to keep Steff distracted from what was actually happening. The sample was collected, but only 2 of the four viles were ready for the doctor. Steff was AMAZING!

She was feeling better today. She talked with her doctor about her symptoms and he says it really sounds like malaria, but could be a weird virus. She will go back in on Saturday to have another draw. He explained that the malaria comes in waves of feeling like death and then feeling back to normal.

The biggest prayer concerns tonight are for their diarrhea to STOP, and their likes for food to increase. And for Steff to stay STRONG and not have anymore episodes of illness.

Do you know for sure that the twins have giardia?? I have met a family that adopted in Nov. with a child that had giardia and they have done lots of tests and meds.....if you want their blog address I can get it to you or even their email, that is if you have (or Steff) questions about how they are dealing with it.

Praying for this family...

What a blessing that you have been there to help! I can't help but smile picturing the scene in the parking lot.

My youngest daughter had to do a LOT of stool samples when she was about 3. It brings you to a whole new level of motherhood. I can totally relate to the story. I collected more poo than the average mom. =)

Again...add the heavy whipping cream to the pediasure drink. It does add the weight fast. (Check my other comments)

On another note, my Dad pick up a bug similar to malaria and it came in waves just like that. It did, over many months, work its way out of his system. That is so typical of overseas travel.

I am still praying that God will heal all of them.

I am in awe of what is going on in their lives. I cannot begin to imagine what is going on in her mind and heart. Thanks so much for the jokes and being there for her. I wish I could have stayed longer. You are creating a bond that will last the rest of your lives. I am incredibly thankful that Steff has you to call friend. I am sitting here crying, hoping and praying for their recovery and their strength. Hugs all around from the Texas cousins. Love you all! P. S. Tell Steff that the school staff, the prayer team and the children are praying for them. This story has touched so many, she has no idea. They even had her blog up at the secretary's desk the other day!

Hi Laura,
I'm commenting from Haiti because of what you said about Steff possibly having malaria. For some reason doctors in the US and Canada are so slow to want to do anything about malaria like symptoms. My husband has had malaria 5-6 times since he's lived here (5+ years) and now he just gets a cure dose of chloroquine whenever he starts feeling symptoms (fever, fatigue etc) because it's so common. If at all possible tell Steff to find a doctor that specializes in tropical medicine as the average doctor has no experience and is hesitant to make a diagnosis. At the least they should be doing blood work on her which would hopefully show something. There's no reason why she should "just wait for it pass" when the cure dose is 10 chloroquine pills over 2 1/2 days. She has so much other stuff going on that the last thing she needs to be dealing with is malaria. And, if the chloroquine doesn't clear it up in a few days she'll know she has something else.
Just my two cents that I hope might be helpful.

Steff is the mama of the YEAR. I am gagging from here.

Thanks for the details, Laura. :) Maybe try alternate fats than dairy...sounds like some big-time lactose intolerance...you'll know right away if you take dairy out and the diarrhea stops. Malaria...yep...feels like death all right...glad she's feeling better though...

Just letting you know that I am praying for this family with the precious twins! What a challenge!!! We are fostering a little 15 month old who is also not gaining weight properly...
It's so hard when you desperately want them to eat and gain weight and they are not.
But God is in control and I will pray for them and the whole family during this very difficult time!
By the way, some of the diarrhea may be linked to stress and anxiety. My little one has had the opposite problem :) - but I read that they can both be related to stress - and the twins would definitely have had a lot of that, too, with changing environment, carers, countries etc etc.

All the best to you - VICTORY!!!

I've been reading your blogs for a little while and keeping up with this amazing story. Well... I had to comment. Stef. is much better than me. This month we had to get 3stool samples for my youngest. (bad diapers since Jan.) I blame it on being pregnant, but I just could not get the samples. My husband is my hero. What a process!!!
