Yahweh Roi--

Yahweh Roi (yah-WEH row-EE)--The Lord My Shepherd

This is the name of God that we have been studying this week. I find it amazing as I am going through our Bible time how the Lord uses the material to penetrate my heart. Every week the name that we study applies directly to what I need to know of the Lord. This week He has been revealing such blessed things to me. I, in turn, get to teach them to the girls. We started talking about a shepherd and how he cares for his sheep. We talked about how he keeps them safe at night in an enclosed area. Then the Lord gave me this beautiful picture.-- We are His sheep. When a lamb goes missing from the flock, the shepherd goes out after that one. He searches for that lamb. When He finds that lamb He gently carries it back to the flock. If that little lamb is in danger or hurt...He gently cares for it. He is Our Shepherd and right now He is out after our "little lamb" that is missing from "our flock". He has us (as His sheep) safe and secured in our home, and that little one needs to be brought into the safety of this flock.

In Ezekiel 34:11-16a it says..."This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself will search for my sheep and look after them. As a shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness. I will bring them out from the nations and gather them from the countries, and I will bring them into their own land. I will pasture them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines and in all the settlements in the land. I will tend them in a good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel will be their grazing land. There they will lie down in good grazing land, and there they will feed in a rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. I myself will tend my sheep and have them lie down, declares the Sovereign LORD. I will search for the lost and bring back the strays. I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak..."

Wherever our little lambs are He is going to bring it to us. It feels like clouds and darkness right now because we can not see what He is doing. But He is out rescuing our lambs in His arms. He is going to bind up its wounds and strengthen it. He is going to bring it to our flock where He will continue to be our Shepherd. Isaiah 40:11 says "He tends His flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to his heart: He gently leads those that have young."

Wherever our little lambs are, My Shepherd is carrying them close to His heart. He has and will continue to gently lead all of us that are parents of young. What an encouragement that is. Thank you, Jesus! When the wait intensifies itself, when I wonder how this is all going to work out, when I am flooded with fear, when I am overcome with weariness-- I can remember that He is Yahweh Roi!!!

This is a great post. If it's ok, I would like to put a link to your blog on my site. We just taught at an adoption conference and I would like people to have access to your site..if that's ok. It might generate more "activity" for your adoption, as well.

Oh Laura this is cool...I knew His name El Roi (God who sees) but not it added to Jehovah.

He certainly is your shepherd and can see beyond this hill, valley and knoll.

I love that you study the names. Maybe we'll borrow that idea!! Do the girls get as much out of it as you do? Do they remember the meanings? Apply them to their lives at random times?

So cool!

Christin--
Yes they do get so much out of knowing the names of God!! It amazes me! One example...when we were praying for my aunt and uncle as he was battling cancer, they would pray (without prompting from me) to Jehovah Shalom--The Lord Our Peace and Jehovah Rapha--the Lord our Healer.

Some are more difficult than others, but we still learn them.

I didn't want them to just know about God, but rather to truly know Him. To know who He is.

So to answer your question...yes, they are using them at random times. They are remembering the names of God and applying them. I didn't know what I was going to use for our Bible curr., so I am so grateful that the Lord lead us to do this. He is so Good!

Laura,
I was talking about this with my kids the other day...I heard once that when a sheep falls over it can't right itself because of it's shorty stubby legs, so the Shepherd has to put it back on it's feet. I don't know if that's true or not, but it's a sweet picture of what God does for us.
Would you mind sharing what curriculum or book you are using to go through this with your kids?
Thanks,
Natalie

Natalie--

One of the books that I am using is Praying the Names of God by Ann Spangler. It has a name for each week with a devotional for each day. Monday starts out explaining the name and Friday ends with all Scripture verses pertaining to that name. Sometimes the devotionals are more geared toward adult, but I just adapt them for the kids. There are other things that I sometimes use to tie in with this, but this would probably be the base of it. She also has a Praying the Names of Jesus book.

The girls keep little index card binders with the name of God, the definition, and the key verse to it. Out of all of the verses that are listed for the week, I choose which ones I want the girls to memorize with that name.

Hope this helps! Do this make sense?

Hi Laura,

Thank you. I am excited to do this with my kids. I think it is a really special way to know God by who He says He is.

Thanks for sharing.
