Not only am I a naughty mommy (as seen in the post below), I am also a mean mommy too. Today is one of our dear daughter's birthday. So when she woke up today, we did the big hoopla of it being her birthday. I then walked her over to the dishwasher that Matt and a friend installed last night and said "Happy Birthday, Honey...here is your birthday present!!!!"
You see a few months ago our dishwasher started beeping ridiculously and stopped running. We tried numerous times to get it working again, but nope...it just wouldn't. We were forced to begin washing dishes by hand. Ok, so I say "we" very loosely, because mainly this became the girl's job. Now during the summer months it was ok for them to spend an hour or more washing dishes...splashing water on each other, blowing soaps suds around the kitchen, making up duets, and the occasional (or not so occasional fighting)...you know how the washer always tries to get ahead of the dryer. Well, now that school is running...that incredibly time consuming chore was getting really old.
Matt and I ran downtown to the appliance store to see what sort of deals they had. (Just so you know...I don't buy anything unless it is a deal, but I think you already knew that about me.) Anyway, the guy that owns the store also happens to be our neighbor. We tried asking him if he would give us a 3 for 1 deal...a new washer and dryer and dishwasher for the price of one. It didn't work. He did, however, give us a really good deal on the new dishwasher. They delivered yesterday and like I said, it was installed last night.
It only seemed fitting to tell her that it was her birthday gift. She laughed and then realized that I might sort of be serious about this. As we sat eating breakfast, she said sheepishly, "so is that really my birthday present?" Of course, I replied with a "it sure is...isn't it really nice!!?!" Matt came down to leave for work and he gave her big hugs and wished her a happy birthday. She looked up at him and asked if the dishwasher was really her present. Matt went along with it and told her not to tell the other girls, but that was the most expensive birthday present we've ever given. He said, "not even mommy gets presents that expensive." She was so kind as to express her gratitude and thank us for the nice present.
She finished off her breakfast in a pondering sort of mood. Ok, so then I broke down...I had to tell her we were just kidding! Man, we're mean! She is now hurriedly finishing her school work so we can take off and go shopping. We are also going to go roller skating and have whatever food she wants today. So seeeeeeee, we aren't really that mean! ;)

Oh you are HILARIOUS Laura! I could not stop laughing. Your household sounds exactly - EXACTLY like ours!! I love faking out my girls. :) Ha! (Only you & Matt must be better at it than we are... our girls just roll their eyes and say, "MOOOOMMMMM!!")
Happy birthday to your sweet girl... who, despite her disappointment in the birthday appliance, still expressed gratitude!!! :)
P.S. I would have broken down and admitted the scheme too, at that point. I can just picture her forlorn little face trying SO hard to be thankful for the dishwasher. LOL!
P.S.S. Just read your comment on Uptown Girl. Yes there is a way to change your width but you need to be a major nerd to do it (like me). :) Email me... it's rebecca@uptowndesignstudio.com, we'll chat.
Hey, R, I think you are a pretty fabulous nerd, and I'm a dork...so it's all good.
That is too funny! It sounds like something my parents would have told me. :)
Such fun photos. She looks like quite the firecracker! So much personality!
Oh my goodness - I nearly blew water out my nose just laughing at the fact that I can totally see you two playing that MEAN joke on your dear daughter! Classic. And I love her reaction....or lack of reaction :-)
JJ turns TWO on Friday....too bad he's too little to play that kind of joke on. Some day I'll get even though. Wuaaaaaaa!!
LOL!!! You kinda have a streak going on!!!!
That is REALLY funny and MEAN. LOL.
oh i can just hear her asking if that is really her present!
happy birthday banana girl!!
how do you get that collage of pics at the beginning of this post? - i'd love to make one!
lori
Wow ... and I thought giving my kids a toothbrush and telling them to get down and scrub me clean some tile grout was mean .....
What ?!?!?
Laura--I am so impressed by your daughter's reaction! She must be a very sweet, unselfish girl to actually thank you for getting her a kitchen appliance for her birthday! Personally, I think she deserves an EXTRA present for being so content and grateful :)
Wow, you ARE mean! Poor girl! Happy Birthday!!! Tell your mom that you want to come out here and visit me for your birthday!! I'll give you some shopping money!!!:)
See Laura, bribery is a much more effective parenting technique!
P.S. I love the photos, they look like they could be her senior pictures!
Heather--due to the fact that she can't drive herself out to visit you...you might want to consider bribing me! just a suggestion.
Laura, I have two words for you.....FREE FOOD!!!!!
You are cruel:)
Somehow I don't see you doing anything any different though>
Happy Birthday, A!!! Someday you'll have the opportunity for payback! Watch out Laura!
Laura, love the pics. They look so clear and crisp.
I love it! So funny. It is one of the special priviledges that parents have to tease and trick their kiddos. Hey, we gotta get something out of this deal! And I love the way you arranged the pics at the top. How do you do that? I am in blog infancy.
Oh, how sweet and mean! I can just see her AND you. You've faked me out a few times :) I too think she deserves an extra present for being so appreciative of the dishwasher. no tantrums from her!!
Btw, so glad you got rid of that "trashy" music. You know how sensitive i am to that stuff (of course, i don't listen to the words, just got a good beat and it's easy to dance to :))))
Happy birthday (sorry I am late!)
Hilarious! I guess I'm a mean mom too, b/c I SO would have done that! too funny!!!
I love that she said thank you. . .great mom!
